ancillary task pictures

These are the images I have taken for my ancillary task. Which is a poster linking with the teaser trailer. Whilst taking these photos I have positioned the model in different posse's, all which I think are effective and work well as a poster. These are are taking in different angles giving the effect of Innocent and vulnerability. From this set of images I will choose which image I take on further for producing my poster.

Sound Effects

This is another sound effect that I have found. This is a sound effect that is using short with only being nine seconds. This is an effect sound as it gets louder as well as it building up tension, this can easily be used within the trailer as at the end the effect I could put something unexpected, as this is what the effect sounds like what it should do. Within my trailer I hope to use sound effects as I believe they have a great impact on the overall trailer.

Sound Effects

Choosing to create a trailer I have went in to researching sound effects, as I believe that the sound effects add to the tense feeling that the viewer would feel along with the trailer itself. Sound effects are put in the background to highlight what you see within the trailer at the time, therefore linking in with each other. I chose this sound effect as I think it would easily contribute within the genre of the trailer.

Poster and Tilte Font Ideas.

These are fonts that I like, one of these may be used as my main title font. I have got a wide range of different fonts so I have more of an opotion when deciding on what font I willl use for my final product.

All of these fonts have a different edge to them. This is ranging from being bold, so the title will stand out and would be eye-catching to the viewer, or have the effect of errostion, which is a very goood effect as I believe it is suitable for the use of horror and again lookds effective. Overall the main one I like out of the selection I have chose, is the 3rd one down, this is because I really like the way the title altogether looks, I like the effect of it dripping, and I think it links closely with the genre of horror, and is effective and eye-catching.

Effective taglines

Tag lines are used as an memorable phrase designed to capture attention. Most trailers use tag lines to bring in the viewer as well as making them feel uncomfortable and on edge. The tag lines I have come up with that link with the storyline and genre of the tesure trailer is..

"your never alone"

"they will come"

"who will survive. dead vs alive"

"the night they walked in"

"uninvited guest. uninvited breath"

"evil around every corner"

Important Conventions Of The Trailer

Deciding on doing a teaser trailer, their are many important conventions included in a trailer to make it professional. The different types of conventions is..

Every type of film trailers must include MPAA green band rating at the start of the trailer, to show that the trailer has been approved and has been professionally rated, this shows that the trailer about to be shown is suitable for the direct target audience. The green band clearly states that it is 'restricted' which means it is not suitable for all audiences only ones that focus on horror, therefore this band will be used for most horror films.

Following the green band, another important convention is the production company, this is shown at the beginning of the trailer along with the green band, though the production company is normally represented by a still image, which is their logo or sometimes can be a short clip. For an example I have chosen '20th Century Fox' as it well known, established production company by producing hundreds of films.

From their doing some research into production companies that would sponsor an independent and British horror film. I believe that Film 4 would be the best representative for this.

The Haunting in Connecticut Trailer

This is the film poster that links in with the teaser trailer below. This poster is effective and has an impact on the viewer, as it states that it is 'based on a true events'. This makes the on looker on edge as they now know, before watching anything to do with the film, that is based on true events and this will add to them feeling insecure and vulnerable. As well as the main image that is something unnatural and scary, the whole image is effective as the main character is young boy and therefore people will look upon him as vulnerable, the effect of something coming out of the child's mouth also adds to the feeling the viewer has towards the young boy. The use of dark shades of colour adds the grim, scary effect, as dark tones relate to dark emotion, this looks effective and as the use of white font for the writing, which is showed in different sizes, clearly stands out therefore it is eye-catching to the viewer bringing there attention to the small font above the main title, the phrase 'Some things cannot be explained' and how this is centered - this is a good layout. Whilst all eyes are focusing on the boy, the word 'haunting' has been displayed in large font, this is effective as everyone understands the meaning of 'haunting' and therefore the whole poster puts the viewer on edge. This is something I wont to carry on in my work.

This trailer is very effective and clearly shows the amount different incidents that happens within the film. The most effective thing about the whole trailer is the continuous voice over, and the use of the reason why this trailer is effective as it shows a sort of before and after effect how the main characters are shown searching the house, as well as showing the scenes of where the characters are describing the house history, therefore the audience no what to aspect, making them feel alone and vulnerable. I believe the most effective parts of the trailer is when the editing is varied from jump cuts to normal pace, but you notice that towards the end this is where the jump cuts are mostly used. Also the use of sound effects are effective as this adds to what you see at the trailer, at the time. Sound effects are put there to add more dramatic and atmospheric sense towards the trailer as you watch it, and I truly think that this trailer successfully make you feel on edge and in a way leaves you asking the question what happens next, this is something I want to take on through to my teaser trailer.

The Strangers Theatrical Trailer

This poster for The Strangers is different to others I thought because of the way it also involves a subtitle 'Because you were home' this is effective as it is direct to the audience and already puts you on edge without watching the film, or even looking at the rest of the poster. Also I like the way the film name 'the strangers' is presented, how the words have a shadowed, blurred effect on the jet black background, this makes it stand out and eye catching to the on-looker. The main image tells a story within itself, and the prop of using masks adds to the horror genre, as masks could be linked to suspicion and also the aspect of you cant see the face, gives the audience a sense of insecurity. This poster is very effective in the way that it brings in the audience with the subtitle and the use of the masks as you don't see masks generally used in horror genre of films/posters.

This is the trailer that links with poster. The beginning of the film gives the effect of innocence with the added sound effect of the piano playing as well as the voice over. The first section of the trailer introduces the main two characters clearly, making the viewer know that the film is based on these two characters, this leads the viewer awaiting what is going to happen to them. then all changes for the worst, this is shown by the use of sound effects and voice overs. The use of the editing technique of fading to a blank black screen and being kept like that for 3 seconds makes the viewer on edge, especially as from how it is repeated through out the trailer, then from the first time it fades back into scene of the women looking fragile and scared. The use of silence within this trailer really makes the viewer on edge and in a sense holding their breath as to what is to happen next, using the silence is a good technique something I want to carry on into my own work. The use of jump cuts in editing adds the tension of the film, this is used like most others at the end of the trailer, bring mixed emotions towards the trailer. What I like about this trailer over all though is how when you think its all over announcing names that created the film, it fades back to the film, on a still image from the scene focusing on the little girl masked, this is effect as you find yourself focusing on her expecting her to do something but it fades straight back into darkness, therefore that still image scene was just used to scare you and in a way look closely to the girl.

Ancilltary Task, - Magazine re-search

EMPIRE MAGAZINE
This is the mast-head, the font of writing is large, bold and clear, the use of red text makes it stand and makes the writing 'pop' from the rest of the cover, as here the background in deep shades of blue therefore its eye-catching. This will be something I carry on into my own work.

The ancillary task is to create a front cover which promotes the teaser trailer. I decided on focusing on Empire magazine as they only focus on films and whats new and whats up and coming. From these front covers I have learned that they all have a main image that is eye-catching and effective which is centered which makes an overall front cover intense and dramatic. From re-searching empire magazine I have also taken on the layout of each front cover, how the writing is placed in both sides of the images, as well as using mast heads, tag line, different size of fonts, strap lines and the website. This will all be what I bring into my own work.

First and Failed Attempt

Following through with the plan, we attempted to film our trailer. We had the actors, the location, but due to faulty equipment we didn't succeed with doing filming our work. From this we have all learnt to check equipment to make sure everything works in the correct way before we go out and film.
